You don’t deserve to navigate racial issues in therapy as if you are traversing a minefield.
Why Counsellor of Colour?
You deserve a counsellor who is not just race neutral. You deserve a counsellor who won’t need to second guess the various hues of racism and inequalities that impact your life. In therapy, the onus should not be on you to make yourself understood. My experiences as a single mom, a Muslim migrant and an international student, makes me understand first hand the full spectrum of racism and societal and institutional inequalities that affect the lives of people of colour.
I am here for you
Let’s work together.
Individual Counselling:
Counsellor of Colour (CoC) is used here to convey empathy for people of colour. Racial stress might not be your main concern, however, it could be contributing to your distress. Experiencing or witnessing forms of racial acts can cause anxiety, withdrawal, low mood, stress, loneliness and hyper-vigilance. Prolonged racism can result in racial trauma with symptoms similar to PTSD. With personal and professional experience and understanding of racial identity and racial trauma, I can offer you a safe, non-judgmental space to explore, process and heal from your experiences and suggest coping strategies.
Groups and Community Activities:
RECONNECT - a healing-oriented gathering for people who are looking for a safe space to uplift each other through connecting, sharing and listening to each other.
IDENTIFY YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF - in individual or group settings, the program helps you explore your cultural and ancestral roots, discover racial identity, identify parts that you no longer relate with to recognise your authentic self that you are proud to embody.
DISCOVER GENERATIONAL TRAUMA TO INITIATE HEALING AND STRENGTHEN RESILIENCE - a a two-hour guided exploration of generational trauma, healing and resilience.
Identifying the deeper wounds of suffering is central to healing and recovery. A tree needs healthy roots to survive and thrive. Exploring our roots can help unearth where they may have been severed, damaged or diseased. Identifying ancestral trauma can help mend, reconnect with or make peace and let go of the roots that continue to impact current life. Be the person to stop the next generation from inheriting the legacies of trauma.
It is more than skin deep
Counsellor of colour symbolises not just the colour of skin. In my practice as a counsellor of colour, I acknowledge intersecting identities and experiences, promote anti-oppressive, inclusive and equity-based values. My trauma informed practice acknowledges trauma of racism and impact of racial distress on mental health.
Therapy sessions where you don’t need code switching.
All humans have the tendency to seek acceptance and belonging. In doing so we sometimes adopt ways that we perceive as acceptable that makes us lose the sense of our authentic selves. Therapy is one area you should not need to perform the mental gymnastics of fawning and code switching in order to feel safe.
By celebrating her own intersectionality, Counsellor of Colour inspires clients to feel safe to be their authentic selves so that they can reach their maximum potential and live a meaningful, fulfilling life.
Improve your relationship with yourself.
Know who you are to be your authentic self, alone and with others, and cultivate genuine friendships and relationships and live a life that you are proud of.
